So you made a character and joined up...

But you don't know what to do now...

It's alright, it takes time to get things started, especially if your characters new or if you never RPed with us before.

Here's how you make an RP post:

[icon] Name (Location): *action* dialogue.

If you can, create an icon for your character.

How do you do that? There are a couple of ways: you create another Deviant Art account with your
character's name or anything you can remember. Most of us put our character's name and "plz" at the end, but that's up to you. Just make the name easy enough to remember.

So how do you post that icon on the chat?

Type in :icon(the dA account's name):. For example, it will look something like this: :icontnicoplz:

Another way to post an icon if you don't want to go through the hassle of creating another Deviant Art account is to upload a picture of your character you drawn and post the thumb. It's here on the right side of the deviation, just  copy and paste the code onto the chat:

Just as a warning, though, sometimes those thumbs fail through some of dA's hiccups and glitches. It doesn't happen often, but be aware of this. Also, if you choose this method, make sure that you drew the picture yourself or have explicit permission from the original artist to upload it to your account.

The last way is for those who can't create an icon or a deviation is to capitalize their character's name and put it on bold:

[[ REIKA ]]

Looks silly doesn't it? But I won't lie, if your post does not have an icon, chances are it will be missed. So how do you make that work? By making your character's name as noticeable as possible so the RPers can see it easier. Thus capitalizing the name and bolding it (Add a few ~ or anything else without overdoing it) will help others see it better on a really active day.

Of course you have to add your character's name after the icon, but you also need to type the location in (_). It helps saves the embarrassing scenario of any character walking up to a character and it turns out they're on top of a building or somewhere unreachable through normal means. It also helps filter out which character is nearby in a sense.

A location list is here :dummy:: fav.me/d5g73wf

Now for the rest of your post: You can use *__* to make an action such as *he calmly sips tea* and parenthesis to indicate thoughts: (How did he know about my nature?). When your character speaks, it's not encased in anything. Example:

:icontnicoplz: Nicolae (Hallways): *he calmly sips tea and stares at the newcomer* You assume much...(How did he know about my nature?)

That's the basic format of an RP post, but there are other formats as well, depending on the RPers choice. Just make it clear which part of it is dialogue and which is just action or inner thoughts. I personally italicize the inner thoughts and I seen some people wrap dialogue into quotation marks.

Now you know how to make an RP post, it's time to get your character in there!

"But my character's a loner...I want to RP with other people, but how?"

Go to the cafeteria or bump each other in the hallway. In my experience at VVA, most of the meetings happen in the Cafeteria or in the Hallways. Your character can also comment on other's people's actions in their head or engage in really short spurts of conversation. If your character stays holed up in a place where no one hardly goes, then you do it for the sake of fleshing out your character solo. Sometimes subtle RPing works as well. Though I'm sure being a loner isn't the only
characteristic your OC has. After all, even loners who are interested ina hobby or a gift they have can talk nonstop on it if they're asked. It's all about finding creative ways to work with different types of characters.

Can't find time to RP in the chat? Get involved by submitting pictures or pieces of literature. You can be sure that there are some people who will RP off-chat for the lulz.

And that ends the "Getting Started" guide. Enjoy your stay at Vixxik Volt Academy!
